The peoples of the world are all indigenous to some place on Earth. Although we may think only of "native" peoples when we think of indigenous people, even white Europeans are "indigenous" to Europe. All of the places on Earth have people whose ancestors learned many thousands of years ago to survive on the resources available around them. In most cases, they also survived without depleting those resources. The practices of those ancestors have been passed down over the generations and those peoples who remain in their ancestral homelands often practice the same methods of farming, herding, and fishing as their ancestors. The "modern" world could learn much from these indigenous peoples and their connection to the "ancient" world. During the past several years, indigenous people of North America have reached out to indigenous people of Central Asia for an unprecedented exchange of traditional culture, values, and wisdom about environmental protection. The scientists and humanities scholars who have participated are among the most respected professionals in their respective fields—on both sides of the world. This is a story of how indigenous peoples around the world can share traditional knowledge that can be applied to modern problems. The lessons they can teach us could very well save our planet.
